It’s been a little on the warm side, so keeping cool has been a priority for most critters. We keep a livestock dip tank in the back yard filled with water for the labs to jump into when they need a cooling-off. Of course, they prefer to be indoors with air conditioning and cold wood floors. I can’t blame them.
Jesus told a story about a man wanting relief from the heat. “Father Abraham,” he cried, “have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.”
The point is that separation from God is a terrible thing. Not one of us has ever experienced that. As the apostle Paul said, “He is actually not far from each one of us, for ‘In him we live and move and have our being.’” But after this life has run its course, real, permanent separation becomes an agonizing possibility.
We don’t know whether that torment will be literally blazing hot, but we understand that those who experience it will be in agony. We don’t want that for ourselves or anyone else. This world is hot enough.
That’s something to think about.
